HR series: Hybrid and Remote Working with Eversheds Sutherland

The second in a four-part series for 2026, this is an online session for IHE members with Robert Gray of Eversheds-Sutherland.

Hybrid and remote working arrangements are now an established part of working life across the higher education sector, but the conversation has evolved considerably in recent years. Institutions are increasingly balancing operational and financial pressures with staff expectations around flexibility, recruitment and retention, while some employers are seeking greater in-person attendance and reconsidering existing arrangements.

In this session, employment law specialists from Eversheds Sutherland will explore the current legal and practical landscape surrounding hybrid and remote working. The discussion will consider whether institutions are continuing to see demand for flexible working arrangements, the challenges that can arise where employers seek a return to more in-person working, and how both staff and employers are responding to the current environment.

The session will cover contractual considerations, flexible working requests, equality and diversity implications, working time and wellbeing issues, as well as the wider employee relations and organisational risks associated with different working models. It will also explore the practical steps institutions can take to ensure that policies, procedures and management approaches remain fit for purpose in a changing landscape.
