Managing risk in English assessments for international students

Risk in the recruitment of international students is increasing. The Home Office has been looking more closely at how higher education providers assess English language, including the common tests used and in-house assessment methods. English Language tests are not a guarantee that a student will get a visa — more students are being turned away on credibility grounds than ever before, with language frequently mentioned in refusal decisions.

This session, in partnership with Pearson PTE, will explore how higher education providers can be more confident in assessing the English Language capabilities of international students at application stage. It will also cover visa application, enrolment and support once students start their course, so that English doesn't become a barrier to their success.

This session will cover:

• English Language as a risk in the recruitment of international students
• why English Language tests don't guarantee a visa, and the growing role of credibility and language in refusals
• how providers can build confidence in assessing English Language capability at application
• what support can help students take the next steps in their academic journey with confidence in their English ability.
